World-famous sports car manufacturer RUF who was celebrated on multiple occasions because of its exceptional technical solutions on the 87th International Geneva Motor Show presents the first member of a fully redesigned high-tech-generation: RUF CTR Anniversary. For the first time, the supreme two-seater is based on the carbon fibre chassis fully designed and manufactured in RUF; its standard abbreviation CTR thereby reminds us of the legendary “Yellow Bird”, the first Biturbo-coupe that astonished the world of super sports cars 30 years ago.
“I spent a long, long time thinking about the concept for CTR Anniversary ”, Alois Ruf, president and owner of RUF Automobile GmbH, remembers. “The first car that we fully designed and manufactured represents a special chapter in the history of our company. Its presentation on the 30th birthday of the celebrated Yellow Bird is an appropriate moment. ”
A new chapter in our history about the David and Goliath
The fourth generation of super sports cars made by the company RUF is a homage to Yellow Bird, RUF CTR from 1987. When it comes to shape and power, technical superiority and perfect function, it follows the ideal of the first CTR without interruption or supplements. The phenomenal weight per unit of power of only 1.6 kg per HP (3,7 lbs per HP), the first carbon fibre chassis created to suit our progressive concept of rear engine and seemingly unlimited power of six cylinders are the main components that make the CTR Anniversary unbeatable shiny jewel of the automotive industry.
The design of CTR Anniversary follows the guidelines that the Yellow Bird set at its time: uncompromising aerodynamic efficiency through the development of shapes in the wind tunnel. Simplified outline, narrow-body looking as if it is obeying turbulence, rear air intake and even instrumentation are a grandiose reflection of the first draft. There is one difference: the aerodynamic body of CTR Anniversary was not made from steel sheets, not aluminium but carbon fibre for Formula 1.
The print of CTR Anniversary fits the high-performance concept: forged aluminium rims in 19-inch format on the front wheels carry tires whose size is 245/35 ZR 19 and on the driving axle 305/30 ZR 19.
Powerful, verified and always fully updated.
Technical perfection of CTR Anniversary was displayed already in the carbon fibre body. For the first time, both bearing elements of the chassis, as well as the chassis, were fully designed and made from carbon fibres in RUF. Shaft bearing and Crash-structure of the front part of the vehicle were made from steel pipes of great strength which protect the passengers with their extremely stable structure equally as integrated roll cage CTR Anniversary. Similar construction made from steel pipes and full gnawed carriers made from light metals takes the rear powertrain. Big safety reserves of this super sports car are not accompanied by additional weight because of the know-how developed by RUF over decades: CTR Anniversary weighs only 1200 kilograms.
As in the majority of noble RUF coupes, CTR Anniversary uses the concept of the rear engine. A flat-six boxer engine with an engine capacity of 3.6 litres matches the direct further development of the power package in the back part of Yellow Bird. RUF also installed dry-sump lubrication originating from motorsport racing in the new CTR, which, thanks to its high throughput, not only does the optimal supply to all the moveable parts of the engine, even under brutal centrifugal forces in very fast and long turns. The nominal power of this force is 6750/min at 522 kW (710 HP); the maximum torque is achieved at 2750/min and it is not less than 880 Nm (649 lb-ft). For example, when it comes to sports cars, the range between the maximum torque and maximum power promises a new quality of drive of this super aggregate even in the normal drive down the road. It will reach the speed of 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds and it reaches the speed of 200 km/h in less than 9 seconds. The maximum speed of movement exceeds 360 km/h.
The model function of Yellow Bird is also transferred to the gearbox: it was fully recovered in RUF and has six gears transmitted manually. For us, RUF results in the most coherent way to enjoy time behind the wheel of CTR. Shaft drive happens through the non-slip differential.
“Five years ago we started designing a version of a breath-taking analogue super sports car”, Estonia Ruf explains. “While doing so, we decreased all functions of digital control and combined fascinating original and uncorrupted manner of driving cars with astonishing low weight per unit of power, manual gearbox and modern racing technique.“
In addition to that, the new CTR Anniversary has excellent use. The basic look of running gear consists of suspensions with one wheel on a double cross strap combined with the unit of spring shock absorbers which were installed along with the chassis and which are moved via pushrods, same as with the Formula 1. According to their dimensions, ventilated perforated ceramic brake discs match the enormous powers they need to overcome: six-piston brake callipers and 380 mm diameter discs are used at the front and four-piston brake callipers and 350mm-diameter discs are used at the rear. This brake system represents a maximal retarding force.
Interior minimalism is an emblem of analogue design.
In the new CTR Anniversary, the decreased interior represents a contrast to the often overstuffed instrument panel of the digital era. Two seats and chosen, high-quality super-light materials make the essence of this almost incredible statement of the delight of driving. Alcantara car seat covers do not promise only aesthetic delight but low weight too. In combination with cockpit-material, leather and carbon fibres, they make a beautiful balance of modern technology and emotional retrospective. The seats were also made from composite material – carbon fibres and perforated pedals were made from light metal. A three-spoke wheel is another element connecting the new CRT to the history of auto racing as well as the analogue odometers on the instrument panel with green twinkling numbers.
Nickname becoming a legend
The first RUF CTR had its debut in 1987. It was created for the maximum speed of movement without competition coupe of 469 HS reached 339.8 km/h during the measurement on the record dragstrip Ehra Lessien. This event was organised by an American automobile magazine Road & Truck. The second fastest car was the newly presented Porsche 959 with the maximum speed of movement of 317 km/h. In the mild fog of North American Prairies, the yellow colour of RUF CTR had a unique shine and editors of Road & Trucks named the narrow coupe “Yellow Bird”. What happened then marked the name RUF as the unforgettably the best car makers in the history of sports cars. In the year of the record, company RUF in the USA obtained a licence from U.S. National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and Environmental Protection Agency to sell and register their vehicles there.
